ABSTRACT
Background. The child actively builds the experiences derived of the home environment. This environment makes it possible specific activities. These opportunities for action, have an outstanding impact over infant development.
Aid. The purpose of this study is to describe qualitative characteristics of several dimensions of the home environment measured with the Infant/Toddler HOME Inventory and to test the relationship between the home environment and some socioeconomic aspects in Mexican urban children.
Material and methods. Sixty-two infants followed up from birth to first year of age were recruited. All infants had low perinatal risk according to their medical records. Home environment was assessed monthly, using the version adapted from Mexico.
Results. The findings, derived from cluster analyses, showed differences in home stimulation, adequate stimulation or poor stimulation, in the following scales: I. Adult contact, II. Amount of development and vocal stimulation, V. Breadth of experience, VI. Physical environment, VII. Play materials, and Total score.
Discussion. The subscales III. Emotional climate and IV. Avoidance of restriction, tipologies were present with higher variability. These scales assess the parental behavior in relation to infant discipline and emotional warmth towards the child.
Although different components of the socioeconomic status were measured, Maternal Education was the variable that had the most significant association with the home environment.
Conclusions. These findings point out the relevance of Maternal Education in the home environment, especially if the mother is the most important or unique caregiver.
These findings showed several implications related the mother’s role in structuring the home environment and the infant development. However, is necessary to keep on research related to home environment characteristics and its relation to socioeconomic aspects.
