Use of Bisphosphonates Associated with Risk of Osteonecrosis in Jaws

ABSTRACT

Bisphosphonates are routinely used drugs in Family Medicine units, in the management of osteoporosis, osteolytic lesions associated with bone metastases, multiple myeloma, malignant hypercalcemia and Paget’s disease. Research on this group of drugs has associated jaws’ osteonecrosis with the use of bisphosphonates; it is important that the Family Physician be mindful of this relationship in order to carry out the necessary preventive activities. Coordination between Family Medicine and stomatology in the management of these patients is essential.
