ABSTRACT
Objective. Evaluate the metabolic profile of workers at the General Hospital of Tlaxcala.Materials and method. A cross-sectional study was carried out on 338 workers at the General Hospital of Tlaxcala, from whom an 8-hour fasting peripheral venous blood sample was taken to evaluate hemoglobin levels, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, glucose, urea, uric acid, cholesterol and triglycerides. In addition, their socio-demographic characteristics were identified.
Results. The average age of the participants was 42.2 years old (SD ± 11.38), 22,5% were men and 77,5% were women. Regarding the reports of laboratory studies the metabolic profile of the participants was the following : 11,2% had glucose levels above 105 mg / dl; 44,1% had cholesterol above 200 mg / dl, 73,4% had triglycerides above 144 mg / dl and 11,8% had hemoglobin below 13 g / dl.
Conclusion. In this population of health workers, a high prevalence of dyslipidemias is observed, which is higher than the general population. This may be due to the unhealthy lifestyle, such as the hypercaloric diets consumption, and low physical activity practice that cause an increase in body weight and adiposity. Hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia, alone or in combination, represent important risk factors for developing cardiovascular diseases, complications and death, so it is necessary to effectively treat these disorders, either with lipid-lowering drugs or changes in lifestyles.
