ABSTRACT
Introduction: The incidence of colorectal cancer has
increased in recent years. In the case of Mexico, colorectal
cancer is the third type of cancer with the highest
prevalence among both men and women. Colorectal
cancer is usually asymptomatic in early stages for what;
usually is detected in advanced stages when it represents
an incurable disease, besides that, the treatments that
are used currently to treat it shows side eff ects that
compromise the health of the patient. For this reason,
the use of natural compounds as chemopreventive agents
is currently being promoted. Essential oils are complex
mixtures of volatiles compounds, from natural sources.
Aim: This review discusses the therapeutic potential and
the mechanisms of action of essential oils in different
cells lines of colorectal cancer.
Results and conclusions:
Several studies show, that some essential oils present an
anticancer effect in cell lines of colorectal cancer, therefor
represent an eff ective alternative as chemopreventive
agents, which can be coadjutants in the treatment of
colorectal cancer. This review discusses the therapeutic
potential and the mechanisms of action of essential oils in
different cells lines of colorectal cancer.
