ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the pilot program “Caring for the Caregiver”, designed as a mindfulness-based intervention or a painting workshop, on the well-being, emotional states and needs of caregivers of children and adolescents with special needs in a Hospital in the commune of La Granja in the Metropolitan Region of Chile.
Methods: Evaluation of pilot program by descriptive study with multi-method methodology, including quantitative dimension (survey of affective states and wellbeing before and after the intervention) and qualitative (group interviews around needs, benefits, facilitators and perceived barriers related to the development of the program). Pilot program consisted of two workshops of 4 to 5 sessions of 120 minutes each, which was applied in the hospital to 16 participants.
Results: According to self-report of participants, there was an increase in well-being (60%, p.0.01 ES = 0.54) and in positive affective states (26% p.0.18, ES = 0.55) after the intervention. No changes were observed in negative affective states or in life satisfaction. The participants identify as the main benefits the reduction of perceived stress and as the main facilitator of the assistance the presence of caregivers for their children during the workshop.
Conclusions: The pro-
gram increased positive affective states and welfare of caregivers of children and adolescents with special needs, which was reaffirmed with the participants' perception of the benefits. It is suggested to carry out robust studies with long-term indicators that include clinical indicators of children including cost effectiveness.
