ABSTRACT
Introduction: Overactive bladder (OAB) is a prevalent condition which significantly impairs quality of life.
Objective: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence and comorbidities associated to OAB in women who attend the climacteric clinic.
Material and methods: Observational study in women who attended the climacteric clinic in september 2014. Patients were asked to answer the «Bladder Control Self-assessment Questionnarie» (B-SAQ) and we collected clinical and biochemical data from each participant. Patients were classified as those with OAB and a control group according to their individual score on the PPBC.
Results: 42 patients were included in the study. Among these, 15 were diagnosed with OAB (score › 6 on PPBC), while 27 were considered control subjects (score ‹ 6 on PPBC). The average PPBC score for patients with OAB was 9.93 ± 3.20 compared to 1.77 ± 2.25 for control subjects. Average age was similar between both groups (55 [OAB] vs 54 [control]). Compared to the control group patients with OAB had a significantly higher BMI (31.7 ± 5.86 vs 27.5 ± 3.01; p = 0.021), as well as thyroid dysfunction (46% vs 14.8%; p = 0.050).
Conclusions: Prevalence of OAB in women who attend the climacteric clinic was high at 37.5%, and is associated with specific comorbidities.
