ABSTRACT
Distal forearm fragility fractures occur from a standing height or less, these are the most common fractures in the upper extremity, and the second most common in elderly patients. These are an important source of morbidity. The inversion of the population pyramid due to the increase in life expectancy makes it essential to take special considerations for its management, such as the patient’s bone quality and physical activity. The goal of treatment is to maintain an adequate function of the limb without pain, as well as to conserve, as far as possible, aesthetics, however, there is no consensus regarding treatment in elderly. In general, in elderly patients the tolerance of anatomical deviation is greater, due to the lower functional needs at that age. Radiographic results do not always correlate with clinical and functional outcomes. This article offers an overview of the topic with a special focus on patients with osteoporosis, as well as the opinion of experts in this hospital. This is illustrated by a clinical case.
