ABSTRACT
Background: The type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic-degenerative disease with high prevalence during ageing. This has been associated with oxidative stress; however the scientific evidence is not conclusive. Objective: To determine the relationship of lipoperoxides levels (LPO), antioxidant activity and pro-oxidant factors with type 2 diabetes mellitus in elderly. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in a no probabilistic sample of 146 older subjects, 72 healthy and 74 with diabetes mellitus (DM). After a 12-hour fasting period, we measured LPO with TBARS method, erythrocyte SOD and GPx activities, and total antioxidant status (AT) (Randox Laboratories, Ltd). The data were analyzed by means and Student t-test, chi square (c2) and odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval. Results: The LPO were higher in diabetic elderly than healthy subjects (0.329 ± 0.13 vs 0.293 ± 0.09 mmol/L), although the difference are not significant statistically (p > 0.05). AT showed a lower activity in subjects with diabetes than healthy subjects (0.93 ± 0.22 vs 1.12 ± 0.23 mmol/L; p < 0.05). The pro-oxidant factors in diabetic subjects, high waist-to-hip ratio (men > 1.0; women > 0.80) was a risk factor to lower SOD (OR = 2.47 (95%CI: 1.75-3.45; p < 0.01) and non physical activity was to lower AT (OR = 1.77, 95%CI: 1.38-2.45; p < 0.0001). Conclusions: The data support the scientific evidence of the relationship etiologic and physiopathologic of the oxidative stress with the DM. This could explain the influence of the ageing for the higher prevalence of DM in elderly.
