ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the predicitive value of APACHE II Scale on the mortality in an adult intensive care unit.
Design: Prospective study.
Setting: ICU of a general hospital, Mérida, Yucatán; Mexico.
Patients: All patients admitted to an ICU during a fivemonth period.
Interventions: None.
Results: A total of 348 patients were admitted to the ICU, of these, 326 patients (204 men and 122 women, mean age 52 ± 20 yrs) were included. APACHE II Scale was 7 ± 4.49 points
vs 12.38 ± 5.13; ICU stay 5 ± 4
vs 6 ± 7 days, respectively for survivors and non survivors. The mortality rate was 15.33% and the sensibility and specificity were 56% y 100% respectively, and a predictive negative value of 92% was obtained.
Conclusion: APACHE II Scale is useful to evaluate the mortality in the ICU of Mérida, Yucatán.
