Osteoarthritis of the knee secondary to anterior cruciate ligament injury and its prevention with early reconstruction technique

ABSTRACT

Injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) are frequent and may impair daily activities and sports in young people and athletes. These lesions are an important risk factor to meniscal injuries and cartilage, which in turn may start the process of osteoarthritis (OA). In this review we will observe the evidence that supports early ACL reconstruction, the consequences of time of injury to reconstruction and instability in the appearance of such lesions and our preferred method of ACL reconstruction.
