ABSTRACT
Objective: We determined the prevalence of orofacial pain after the use of occlusal splint in female patients aged 15 to 35 years who sought care in the Orthodontics Department at the Postgraduate Studies and Research Division (DEPeI) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
Material and methods: The study was conducted in the DEPeI orthodontics clinic from 2016 to 2017. It included 15 female patients between 15 and 35 years of age who met the inclusion criteria. We designed a data collection instrument to record the intensity of pain before and after the use of the splint. Pain was measured according to an analog scale for pain. The survey was divided into two phases: phase 1 before placement of the splint and phase 2 after three months of splint use. The clinical information for each patient was collected after patients gave informed consent.
Results: Before use of the splint, patients referred the presence of moderate to severe pain; after placement of the splint they showed some improvement of pain symptoms, and three months later they reported absence of pain.
Conclusions: We found a statistically significant improvement of pain symptoms of the temporomandibular joint, as well as a decrease of clicking joint noise prevalence.
