ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of serum α-1-acid glycoprotein
(AGP) as a new biomarker of sepsis and compare its efficiency with serum levels of
procalcitonin (PCT), taking blood culture as the gold standard.
Material and Method: A prospective study was done from April 2016 to August
2017 including patients with suspected diagnosis of sepsis. The diagnostic performance
of serum AGP was compared with serum levels of PCT through indexes such as sensitivity,
specificity, area under the curve (AUC), positive predictive value (PPV) and negative
predictive value (NPV).
Results: Thirty five patients were included, a p value of 0.049774 was found,
which raises the association between the positive blood culture and PCT, as well
as a p value of 0.612616 that suggests the non-association between positive blood
culture and AGP. For PCT an AUC of 0.804 was obtained, a sensitivity of 58.8% and
a specificity of 100%. For AGP an AUC of 0.594 was obtained, a sensitivity of 41.2%
and a specificity of 100%.
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the measurement of serum levels of the
AGP biomarker is not useful in order to establish the diagnosis of sepsis accurately.
