ABSTRACT
Introduction: At worldwide level, dysmenorrhea is a clinical-pathologic entity widely spread among adolescents, where the colic pain is the main symptom and it comes accompanied by multiples clinical manifestations that might vary from person to person.
Objective: To describe the prevalence of dysmenorrhea, clinical manifestations and treatment schemes used by the nursing student.
Methodology: Descriptive study done in a group of 133 students of baccalaureate in nursing selected by no probabilistic and by convenience sampling. The survey included questions about the presence and intensity of menstrual pain, associated clinical manifestations, and sort of therapeutic handling. A pre-test was applied in a single semester to identify problems in conceptualization and understanding of the survey. Answers were analyzed with descriptive statistics.
Results: From surveyed students, 90% referred dysmenorrhea, from which 20.8% pointed out as severe; the three main clinical manifestations associated with pain were irritability (17%), lumbago (15%) and general bothering (13%). Regarding the treatment, 67.5% used pharmacologic treatment (Syncol) in self-medicated manner; 9.17% used non-pharmacological alternative treatment; and 23.3% did not consume any-thing at all.
Discussion: It is imperative to attend the high prevalence of dysmenorrheal through medical treatment schemes well established, meanwhile to make emphasis on potential risks of no-controlled self medication.
