ABSTRACT
Introduction: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is the most frequent rheumatic disease in childhood. Health professionals need to know their biological origin, evaluate the psychological aspects as the way they interpret their disease. The objective is to describe the type of locus of control in patients with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis and its association with sociodemographic and clinical variables.
Material and methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted with 83 patients between 6 and 16 years of age with literacy skills. The following variables were analyzed: age, education, type of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, disease activity, pain and locus of control.
Results: 60.3% reported an internal locus of control; which was related only in those patients with more than seven years of schooling (70.0%, p = 0.008), unlike the patients with less education (60.7%). 28.9% had activity of the disease and 38.6% reported pain. These variables were not related to any type of control locus.
Conclusion: The locus of control most frequently reported by the patients was internal, the activity of the disease and the presence of pain were not associated with the type of locus of control.
