ABSTRACT
The pernicious oral habits (POH), alter the facial growth, in direction and speed, this generate different magnitude malocclusions; so evaluate the magnitude of a malocclusion is not an easy job. The malocclusion’s magnitude could be evaluated by their needs of orthodontic treatment (NOT), being the index of orthodontic treatment need (IOTN) one of the most used. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the NOT by the IOTN idex and its association with the presence of POH in clinical records of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa that had a POH.
Material and methods: Before been standardized a 2nd year resident of orthodontics evaluate the IOTN in all the records (N = 336) that had a POH (thumb sucking, lingual protrusion, or oral breathing) of 2006-2017 period.
Results: The NOT in an ANOVA was grater for the oral breathing patients 5.14 (± 2.4) (p = 0.015), by the aesthetic component and there no were differences by kind of habit in the functional component (p = 0.073).
Conclusions: The NOT by aesthetic reasons is greater for the oral breathing patients, nevertheless, these need is on the border of the NOT.
