ABSTRACT
Background: Since electricity was discovered, much as been speculated about electrical field effects and subsequent impact on health. Now, on the early years of the XXI century, a renewed interest has emerged on air ionization; this interest has emerged because of technological advances that as conditioned the availability of new, efficient and economic ion generators and better devices to measure ions and their impact on the environment and health.
Goal: The purpose of this document is to evaluate the state of the art of indoor air pollution control with electronegative ion air generators, including a brief review of operational fundaments and health impact from the preventive and therapeutical perspectives.
Method: This is a review of scientific and medical relevant publications related to indoor environmental contamination and the related mechanisms and effects of air ionization.
Outcome: Air ionization research has involved many researchers through the second half of past century. The introduction of new technologies on ion generators, and reliable measuring devices with improved scientific and statistical methods has derived not only on reliable information but also on FDA and OSHA operational and safety standards.
Conclusions: Solid evidence is available on electronegative air ionization health benefits including 1) Neutralization of positive ions damaging effects 2) Reduction of micro environmental particles including chemical toxic, microorganisms, and allergens 3) Respiratory improvement including airway and mitochondrial level. 4) Improved resistance mechanisms including physiological and psychological level.
Discussion: WHO defines health as the optimal bio-psycho-social equilibrium. To maintain health through the years and to achieve a successful longevity it is necessary to accomplish a clean environment, to consume pure water and nutritive foods. Breathing clean air from an ion enriched well balanced atmosphere is now obviously important. Residential, laboral and clinical introduction of effective, low cost and well controlled electronegative ion air generators may represent a breakthrough on human health. Controlled use of negative ion air generators has proven to be of benefit on patients with respiratory diseases. If properly managed they might represent a brake through as a complementary therapy with established treatments.
