ABSTRACT
Background: Platelet separators can be compared using basic measurements, such as yield, relative efficiency, and amount of anticoagulant used.
Methods: Comparative study to know the efficiency of three platelet separators: Baxter
® Amicus, Haemonetics
® MCS9000, and Gambro
® COBE Trima. We did 77 plateletpheresis in the same number of donors, as follows, Baxter, 30 (39%); Haemonetics, 28 (36.4%); and Gambro, 19 (24.6%).
Results: The mean value of the donors’ pre-pheresis platelet count and total processing blood volume did not show significant differences among groups. The mean values of the final volume of the concentrate were significantly different, reaching 324.3 mL for Gambro vs 287 mL for Baxter (p = 0.019). The platelet yield was better for Gambro, with a relative efficiency 2.5 times higher than the one for Haemonetics; the mean processing time was almost double for Haemonetics than for Gambro (p ‹ 0.001). There was a high correlation between the pre-pheresis platelet count and the relative efficiency of the procedures for both, Gambro and Haemonetics, but not for Baxter.
Conclusions: The present study shows the need for systematizing the experience in order to improve our procedures and to use the most efficient cell separators.
