ABSTRACT
The authors present a comparative study of open hernia repair, 2072 cases versus laparoscopic surgery, 278 cases operated in a seven years period, analyzing: type of anesthesia, operative time, complications, length of stay and costs. Laparoscopic surgery required general anesthesia in all cases
versus regional anesthesia in 76% of the open surgery. Operative time, complications, length of stay and costs were considerably higher in the laparoscopic procedures. We conclude that at the present time, the open traditional surgery is the best option for a general surgeon in a typical patient with inguinal hernia.
