ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the association between sleep disorders and circadian rhythm abnormalities with obesity.
Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was designed, subjects aged from 20 to 59 years old were included, the previous signature of informed consent. The sample size included 139 individuals, the Athens Insomnia Scale, the Composite Scale of Morningness and a Food Habits Survey were applied. The analysis was carried out with descriptive statistics, measures of center, variation and percentages. The χ
2 and odds ratio were used for statistical association.
Results: The prevalence of obesity was 35%, overweight and obesity 73%, insomnia 10%, circadian rhythm abnormalities 12%, suitable eating habits 50% and non-promoter eating habits of chronic diseases 57%. The χ
2 and the odds ratio were used in individuals with obesity, and no significance was found. The overweight individuals were grouped to those of obesity to perform the analysis, resulting in significant χ
2 for "circadian rhythms abnormalities" and "eating habits promoting chronic diseases." The odds ratio showed the disturbance of "night awakenings" as a risk factor and the "circadian rhythms abnormalities" as a protective factor.
Conclusions: An increase in the prevalence of overweight individuals in association with nocturnal awakenings and circadian rhythms abnormalities have been identified.
