ABSTRACT
Objective: We present a meta-analysis and systematic review to evaluate the effectiveness of warm liquids versus room temperature to maintain perioperative temperature, reduce hospital length of stay and prevention of hypothermia and post-operative shivering.
Methodology: A systematic search was conducted (in PubMed, ISI Web of Science and Scopus) by independent investigators to identify randomized clinical trials comparing core temperature, temperature decrease during surgery, hospital stay, incidence of hypothermia and tremors in patients who received warm fluids versus at room temperature.
Results: Of a total of 778 initially identified studies, 15 studies were included in the final analysis. The standardized difference of means for central temperature was 1.396 (p ‹ 0.001), for temperature decrease -2.380 (p ‹ 0.001) and for hospital stay -0.957 (p ‹ 0.001); while the risk ratio for hypothermia was 0.333 (95% CI 0.164-0.679, p = 0.002) and for post-operative shivering 0.499 (95% CI 0.310-0.805, p = 0.004), in all cases in favor of the administration of WF.
Conclusions: The use of warm liquids was associated with higher core temperature and lower temperature drop at the end of surgery, as well as with shorter hospital stay, lower risk of hypothermia and also lower postoperative shivering risk.
