ABSTRACT
At the Mexico City General Hospital Cytopathology Department some negative cases are randomly selected as an in-house quality control procedure. The rapid review of all cases procedure was adopted some months ago. The purpose of this study is to compare both methods. In a 7 year period 137,545 pap smears were reviewed, of these 135,937 were negative. 6,117 (4.5%) were reviewed for a second time with 11 false negative results. Additional positive cases represented 0.7% of all cases. In a six months period 6,622 pap smears were seen and all were rapid reviewed again as part of the new in-house quality control program. Twenty seven false negative and 6 false positive cases were detected. Of all positive cases 16.2% were diagnosed after been reviewed as part of the new quality control procedure and 0.1% of all negative cases were also detected after been rapid reviewed for a second time. Rapid review of all pap smears is important because it can detect new cases previously misdiagnosed.
