ABSTRACT
Introduction: Contact with medical procedures and hospitalization can bring discomfort to the child due to changes in the routine of life, painful interventions and fear of the unknown. The Project Teddy Bear Hospital (PHU) of the International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA) is aimed at children from 3 to 6 years of age, aiming to reduce children's fear of physicians, hospital settings and procedures through of service simulations with play material. Simulated service stations in which the child brings a teddy bear or toy that symbolizes their child in order to experience such a joking experience. In 2012, the PHU was implanted in the child education of the University of Nove de Julho (UNINOVE), in the city of São Paulo, as an annual extracurricular activity of the medical students of the same -university.
Objective: The study investigated the perceptions of medical students regarding the contribution of PHU participation experience to their academic training.
Method: The study was conducted at the Nove de Julho University located in São Paulo-Brazil. The methodology used was the qualitative approach. As instruments for data collection were used: field observation and semi-structured interview.
Results: Some themes were identified in the study: strategies of empathic approach; adequacy of language; possibility of applying prior knowledge.
Conclusion: The students considered that the experience could serve as a pedagogical tool for the development of empathy and communication skills in the physician-patient relationship, contributing to the teaching of pediatric practice.
