ABSTRACT
Mexico´s population health profile has
dramatically changed in the last fi fty years. Health
care professionals will be challenged in the near
future to adequate their professional profi les. The
advances in sciences and technology together
with the evolution of the educational paradigm
must be taken into account in order to transform
the health professional profi le. Both areas are two
key components in the foundation of an integrated
curriculum based on our experience through the
Graduate Program in Genomic Medicine at the
Physiology Department of the Health Sciences
Center, University of Guadalajara. We propose
a new paradigm in health, initiating with a new
curriculum design. Three major strategies towards
the effective training of future researchers and health
professionals in genomic medicine were carried out:
1) development of an integrated curriculum based
on the molecular biology of the human genome and
its environmental interaction; 2) teaching genomic
medicine to health science undergraduate students
and 3) performing basic, clinical and social research
to study the health and disease process of major
public health problems in our country.
