ABSTRACT
Introduction: The characteristics, skills and attitudes of the nursing supervisor are of vital significance for the function of the profile. The objective of this study is to analyze the professional profile of the nursing supervisor in a medical unit of high speciality.
Material and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out. The study was carried out in a highly specialized medical unit in Mexico City, with a sample of 43 supervisors belonging to this same unit. An instrument was applied to measure the identity of the professional pro- file of supervising nursing personnel. For the analysis of the information, descriptive statistics tools were used.
Results: Only 20% have postgraduate studies in adminis- tration; the majority (93%) obtained the position through designation. The weekly hours dedicated to the direct supervision of the patient were from 6 to 30 hours. Only 4.6% provide training and active supervision in the services under their authority.
Conclusions: The supervising nursing staff considers themselves capable for the position, even with the lack of management training. There is little active training in the services under their authority, which can have an impact on patient care.
