ABSTRACT
Introduction: Several studies showed that prostate biopsies by sextants, guided by transrectal ultrasound provide insufficient material for detecting prostate cancer, reporting negative false results from 15-35%. For this reason, methodologies have been studied that increase the detection index. In this study, 116 patients were studied who receive biopsies by using the combined method, adding the samples by sextants, additional samples in the periphery and transitional zone.
Results: The results were very similar, compared to the studies with this technique was used, existing the 36% of positive results, in the group under study.
Conclusion: It is concluded that, when raising the total number of samples focused specially to the more lateral portions of the peripheral zone and one additional to the transition of zone, besides the biopsies by sextants, the sensibility of the test is increased without evidencing a significant difference as regards the most frequent location of cancer among the different zones.
