Educational intervention directed to the solar protection in children

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Multiple educational campaigns aimed at the acquisition of healthy solar habits and to increase the perception of UV-radiation-damages on kids, have been implemented in Cuba as in many different countries.Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention aimed directed the solar protection on kids.
Material and Methods: A non-observational cuasiexperimental of before-later without control group study between November 2015-April 2016 in the children of fourth grade of the 13 de Marzo primary school Santa Clara, where the parents and teachers were also included was performed. Sex, level of information about the solar protection, habits of solar protection and effectiveness of the educational program, constituted the variables of the study. Starting from the obtained information, it was designed and applied the educational program “Disfrutemos del sol con responsabilidad” (“Let us enjoy sun with responsibility”).
Results: Before the intervention, the participants didn't maintain habits of solar protection as the use of creams, caps, parasols and the appropriate selection of game places and sports. Starting from it, the program offers actions to foment the care of the skin, as well as information on the harmful effects of the excessive exhibition in the sun and the measures for the photoprotection, the realization of the self-exam, everything conceived for children, parents and teachers.
Conclusions: Educative intervention allowed increasing the information level and practices on solar protection among educational community.
