ABSTRACT
Introduction: Intussusception in an acquired lesion that is characterized by introduction of the intestinal portion in the distal part following the normal peristalsis. The treatment with different methods “pneumatic or hydrostatic” has decreased the surgical reduction.
Objective: Study of patient with intussusception enhanced the clinical presentation, diagnosis method, treatment and reviewing the complicated cases with intestinal perforation.
Material and methods: It is a retrospective study of the clinical charts with principal diagnosis of intussusception, gathered 80 cases form January 1991 to march 2004. The variables were age, sex, personal background, clinical signs, radiographic studies, treatment and mortality.
Results: The most cases found in 2 to 6 months old and were 42 boys and 38 girls. The intestinal bleeding, vomiting and abdominal pain were present in all patients. Only in 57 children had palpable intussusception. In the radiographic studies showed intestinal blocking. The treatment with enema reduction were in 7 and the rest of the cases were under surgical procedure. Only one girl died.
Discusion: It’s discussed epidemiological data and the clinical presentation; the great value on the early diagnosis. The mode of treatment is compared with others series.
Conclusions: Frequency is probable increased in our geographic area; the mayor cause of intussusception was idiopathic; the etiology of one case was an embryologic arrest of viteline conduct; the intestinal resection were done in children with 48 hours of evolution.
