ABSTRACT
Objective: Describe the experience in undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma hepatic.
Material and methods: Retrospective study of patients with undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma hepatic who attended during 31 years. The following data were obtained: age, sex, clinical features, hemoglobin and alfa-fetoprotein, diagnosing imagine, classification according to IRS, surgery performed, chemotherapy and survival free of disease.
Results: Twelve patients were studied with a mean age of 8 years old. The right lobe of liver was affected in 7 cases. Clinical features: abdominal mass, abdominal pain and a normal level of alfa-fetoprotein. Surgical procedures: Open biopsy in 7 patients, right hepatectomy in 3 patients, segmentectomy in 2 patients, radical resection in 4 and 1 with positive surgical borders. Adyuvant chemotherapy was useful in 4 patients. Free-disease survival was 100% in patients who received multimodal therapy and negative in the other patients.
Conclusions: Multimodal chemotherapy has increased significantly survival in patients with this type of cancer, becoming a curable one.
