ABSTRACT
Objective. To determine the bacterial frequency and antimicrobial susceptibility in culture and antibiogram
in samples from patients with diabetic foot infection.
Methods. We selected the files that met the inclusion criteria in the population of patients admitted
with diagnosis of infected diabetic foot, from January 2015 to July 2016 in HCE. Data were collected
for statistical analysis.
Results. A total of 102 patients were included. Twenty-two different species of bacteria were isolated,
the three main ones were
Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and
Enterococcus faecalis. The antibiotic
sensitivity for the three most frequent Gram positive bacteria isolated compared to the empirical
therapy based on ciprofloxacin and clindamycin was low (‹ 50%), for the three most frequently isolated
Gram negative bacteria, empirical therapy based on ceftriaxone or ciprofloxacin was of: Escheri-
chia coli, 22.7 and 22.7%; Klebsiella pneumoniae, 37.5 and 50%; Proteus mirabilis, 57.1 and 28.6%,
respectively.
Conclusions. The antibiotics that showed the highest sensitivity to the most frequently isolated Gram
positive bacteria were, vancomycin, linezolid and tigecycline, whereas for gram negative bacteria a
greater sensitivity was observed in the group of carbapenems and gentamicin. The empirical therapy
used regularly showed low sensitivity to the isolated microorganisms, so it is recommended a readjustment
of antibiotic upon having the record of the antibiogram.
