ABSTRACT
Cellular life depends on dynamic processes such as movement of subcellular structures
as well as chromosomes segregation. Nature has evolved a class of proteins called
cytoskeletal elements that provide these properties. In eukaryotic cells, tubulins,
actin, intermediate filaments, and recently septins have been described. Similar
molecules of all cytoskeletal elements from eukaryotic cells are also present in
bacteria where they perform vital tasks in cell physiology. However, the mechanisms
that control their activities are still under study. General and recent information is
presented.
