ABSTRACT
Membrane assymetry represents a feature of paramount relevance in the physiology
of the eukaryote cell since the differential distribution of lipids represents by itself
the signaling of specific cellular processes. In order to accomplish the membrane
assimetry, the cell is provided with flippases, specialized ATPases moving specific
phospholipids from the exoplasmic side to the cytoplasmic side of the membrane
bilayer, and with floppases moving phospolipids in the opposite direction. In this work
are shown the functions performed by several of these transporters located in the
canalicular region of hepatocytes where the synthesis and secretion of bile salts occur.
Several mutations in the gene encoding for the flippase ATP8B1 produce different
types of cholestasis affecting not only the function of hepatocytes, but extrahepatic
functions, for example in the small intestine or inner ear.
