ABSTRACT
Superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) is due to an obstruction of the superior vena cava that causes an increase in venous pressure in collateral blood vessels and as this obstruction progresses, collateral blood flow develops. Neoplasms cause about 90% of cases. It is recommended to carry out a clinical history with attention in antecedents of invasive procedures, neoplasia and in the duration of the symptoms. The clinical presentation will depend on the evolution of the underlying neoplasia and usually found edema of the face, neck, thorax, upper extremities and vessel venous collateral, followed by dyspnea. Treatment and prognosis depends on histology, staging and previous treatments. In this review, we will focus on the etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of SVCS associated with neoplasia.
