ABSTRACT
Introduction: Cognitive impairment of the elderly patient is a syndrome that leads to increases in social and economic cost.
Objectives: This review of literature aims to guide the cognitive evaluation of the elderly patient during the perioperative evaluation to identify patients at risk of postoperative cognitive impairment or with preoperative cognitive impairment.
Material and methods: A search was conducted in the LILACS, MEDLINE and GOOGLE SCHOLAR databases using the terms cognitive impairment, postoperative, preoperative, mental health, elderly, outcomes and dementia, MeSH (“aging”[MeSH Terms] OR “aging”[All Fields]) AND (“cognitive dysfunction”[MeSH Terms] OR (“cognitive”[All Fields] AND “dysfunction”[All Fields]) OR “cognitive dysfunction”[All Fields] OR (“cognitive”[All Fields] AND “impairment”[All Fields]) OR “cognitive impairment”[All Fields]) AND outcomes[All Fields] AND (“dementia”[MeSH Terms] OR “dementia”[All Fields]) AND (“mental health”[MeSH Terms] OR (“mental”[All Fields] AND “health”[All Fields]) OR “mental health”[All Fields]) with a basic search together with an ambispective snowball search from 2001 until today.
Conclusion: There should be public health policies that allow the reduction of risk factors of preoperative cognitive impairment and postoperative cognitive impairment.
