ABSTRACT
Objective: To know the stability of wide recession of both internal rectus muscles in patients with congenital esotropia.
Material and methods: A retrospective and longitudinal study was made. 86 patients with a deviation range of 35 to 70 prismatic diopters were included. All patients underwent a symmetric recession of both internal rectus muscles at level of the equator or behind. After surgery the presence of residual or consecutive deviation was evaluated. A good result was considered a deviation in the range of 10 prismatic diopters.
Results: Of the 86 patients, 37 were male and 49 female. Some grade of amblyopia was found in 28 patients. The following range was 3 months to 8 years. 51 patients presented orthoposition or a residual or consecutive deviation smaller than 10 prismatic diopters, 27 presented a residual esotropia and 8 presented a consecutive exotropia.
Conclusions: The symmetric recession of the medial rectus muscles to the equator or behind it is a safe and reliable surgical method.
