3D-CT and preoperative planning for the placement of osseointegrated implants for the ear prosthesis

ABSTRACT
Autologous ear reconstruction remains the reconstructive method of choice, most of the time it is necessary to place external auricular prostheses is by suboptimal results of this reconstruction. Since the 1970’s, the use of osseointegrated implants for the fixation of external facial prostheses, hearing aids and dental implants began. The objective of this retrospective study is planning of the placement site of three osseointegrated implants under the base of the ear for the placement of prosthesis. Thirteen patients were studied who underwent marking of proposed placement sites and preoperative 3D CT was performed, which helped to obtain the measurement of soft tissue thickness, bone, presence of mastoid cells and size of the implant were obtained during the intraoperative period. The proposed and the definitive sites were confronted. It is concluded that preoperative 3D CT is essential for the planning of the choice of the implant placement, implant size and presence of cells that will merit a bone graft in order to be placed under the base of the prosthesis.
