ABSTRACT
A prospective longitudinal study with two parallel groups was carried out in order to verify the effectiveness of recreational physical
activity to increase the bone mineral density. Both groups were constituted by women aged 40+ with osteopenia or osteoporosis.
In the first group (cases) 31 patients participated who carried out recreational physical activity (walking in opened spaces three
hours per week), during a six months period without medical supervision. In the second group (control) 30 patients participated
who were classified as sedentary people. They were instructed to carry out this sort of activity during six months. The bone mineral
density of the radius of all patients (n = 61), before and after the experimental interventions, was measured by using a dual energy
X-ray absorption densitometer. When the study was finished we compared the means of both groups using Students’ t criterion and
we realized that they reached a moderately different and insignificant change of the T score average (0.183 against 0.050, p =
0.24). Furthermore, when we applied the Pearson’s coefficient, taking into account all 61 patients, a strong correlation between the
age of the patients and the change of the T score average was observed (r = 0,371, p = 0.03). The multiple linear regressions
revealed a negative coefficient for age. In conclusion, we can say that the older the women were the medically unsupervised
recreational physical activity was the same as sedentarism for obtaining a change (non significant) in the T Score average.
