Diagnosis and classification of nutrition disorders of the hospitalized patient

ABSTRACT
Malnutrition and obesity prevail in the hospital setting and undesired results are
associated to them, such as lengthening of hospital stay, complications, readmissions,
and mortality. The occurrence of nutritional disorders at the time of admission,
together with the simultaneous presence of several components of nutritional care in
hospitals, such as the nutritionists' visits, food entry and nutrition therapy, can have a
positive influence on the hospital stay and the successful outcomes as they measure
specific tracing indicators. Hospital malnutrition is a worldwide problem which today
can be systematically detected, and subsequently, confronted with great results; it
reaches prevalence figures ranging between 25 and 55%, which also reach the 70%
when the patients with overweight and obesity are added. This figures are independent
on the health care level, geographical region or gross domestic product. Cuba is not far
from this reality. Good Food and Nutrition Practices should be established, as well as
create all types of necessary alliances between SNC and GAN, the basic workgroups,
the institution's administering and directing boards, in order to develop systems that
permit early detection of risk patients, their diagnosis, classification and registry entry,
as well as an effective intervention. This article assesses concretely etiologic, clinical
and diagnostic aspects of the nutritional disorders, with the aim to identify the relevant
known, unknown and controversial aspects about malnutrition in hospitalized patients.
