ABSTRACT

The construct describes the person’s ability to distinguish its thoughts and emotions, and the ability to balance its closeness and intimacy with its loved ones. This study aims to develop a questionnaire to assess the construct in two levels and three dimensions (differentiation, fusion and cutoff) within a Mexican population. 340 undergraduates between 18 and 25 years old participated in the study. An internal consistency of α = .909 was obtained with four factors which explained the 37.74% variance. Notwithstanding we pretend to develop a tri-factorial questionnaire but obtain a multifactorial one, this is because Differentiation construct involves several dimensions (i.e., people interaction, thoughts, and emotional reactions). It is necessary additional tests to prove the validity of the questionnaire to obtain a useful tool for asses interactions in Mexican population.
