ABSTRACT
Background: Mainly viral agents cause acute respiratory tract infections they represent in our country one of the main causes of mortality. The most reliable screening test is polymerase chain reaction (PCR); with the advantage that it can detect multiple agents with a single sample simultaneously. Objectives: Descrive the epidemiology of acute respiratory infections in pediatric patients of ABC Medical Center who where tested by multipanel respiratory FilmArrayTM. Material and methods: We performed a cross sectional, retrospective, observational, epidemiologic study in patients whose age were under 18 years old with acute respiratory tract infections and had nasopharyngeal mucus by the respiratory panel FilmArrayTM for the detection of an etiologic agent. Results: Median age of patients was 1.6 years. Most frequently detected viruses where: RSV in 34%, rhinovirus 27.8%, metapneumovirus 7.7% and parainfluenza virus 3 7.7%. The season in which more detections where observed was fall, predominating RSV (47.8%). During winter the most frequent viruses were influenza B in 5.6%, influenza A 3%, A H1 0.5% and A H3 1.5%. Conclusions: Respiratory multipanel FilmArrayTM could identify the most frequent pathogens in pediatric patients with respiratory symptoms.REFERENCES
