ABSTRACT
The present study had two main objectives. The first objective
was to assess the correlations between Internet, mobile phone
and Facebook use with anxiety, depression and self-esteem;
the second objective was to assess the correlation between the
use of the aforementioned technologies, alcohol abuse and
jealousy. Two independent studies were conducted, both of
them with non-probabilistic samples of college students (n=294
first study; n=300 second study) and structured questionnaires
with known psychometric properties. The results of the first
study showed that the use of each technology is associated
with a different mental health profile. The results of the second
study showed direct correlations between the use of the
technologies, alcohol abuse and jealousy. Results are
discussed in terms of the “problem behavior” theory; they are
also discussed in terms of possible prevention and treatment
strategies.
