Influence of nutritional status upon functional capacity of chronic kidney patient subjected to home peritoneal dialysis

ABSTRACT
Rationale: Peritoneal dialysis (PP) administered
at home might be associated with preserved
values of the nutritional status of the insufficient
End-Stage-Kidney-Disease (ESKD) patient, and
a better functional capacity.
Objective: To identify the associations between nutritional
status of ESKD patient subjected to home PD
and functional capacity.
Study design: Analytical, cross-sectional.
Study serie: Thirtyseven insufficient ESKD-patients (Males: 54.1%;
Ages ≥ 60 años: 18.9%; Blood hypertension:
40.5%; Diabetes mellitus: 24.3%) subjected to
home PD (≥ 1 year admitted in the PD program:
54.0%) at the “Dr. Abelardo Buch López”
Institute of Nephrology (La Habana, Cuba)
between August 2014 and November
2014.
Material and method: ESKD-patient’s
functional capacity was measured with the
Karnofsky scoring. Presence of inflammatory
states was established by means of the
measurement of the C-Reactive Protein (CRP).
Nutritional status was determined after using the Subjective Global Assessment as modified by
Kalantar-Zadeh
et al. (1999). In addition, the
current state of selected biochemical indicators
of nutritional status was assessed.
Results: Functional capacity was preserved in 83.8% of
the studied patients. Nutritional disorders were
present in 56.8% of them. Current state of
biochemical variables was as follows:
Hemoglobin ‹ 100.0 g.L
-1: 18.9%; serum
Albumin ‹ 35.0 g.L
-1: 27.0%; and serum Total
Cholesterol ‹ 3.8 mmol.L
-1: 5.4%; respectively.
Fifty-six point seven percent of the study serie
presented with CPR values ≥ 6 mg.L
-1. Patient’s
functional capacity was independent from
nutritional status, and the current values of
determined biochemical indicators.
Conclusions: ESKD-patients subjected to home
DP distinguished themselves for their preserved
functional capacity in spite of the found rate of
nutritional disorders.
