ABSTRACT
Breast cancer is one of the main health problems worldwide as well as in Mexico. The incidence of breast cancer has increased since 2007. In 2014, the Ministry of Health reported 28.75 new cases per 100 thousand women 20 years old and older. It is well known that different imaging methods starting with mammography have resulted in a 35% decrease in mortality rates in countries like Sweden and the United States in the last 20 years. In our country, from 2007 to 2013 the mortality rate has kept relatively stable around 14 deaths each year per 100,000 women. Mammography and Breast Ultrasound play along with other imaging methods an integral role in the detection and management of breast diseases. Probably the most important technological advances in breast imaging in the last decade are the incorporation of tomosynthesis to mammography and elastography to ultrasound. Furthermore, these imaging techniques are excellent guides for the performance of breast biopsies to avoid unnecessary surgeries and future treatment planning in case of malignancy. The objective of this article is to make an update of the breast imaging in terms of the mammography and ultrasound in particular of tomosynthesis and elastography.
