ABSTRACT
Sepsis in Mexico is one of the 10 leading causes of direct maternal death. Obstetric patients represent a challenge under their, physiological changes and sepsis is certainly a challenger pathology to diagnosis and treatment. It’s an important cause of admission to intensive care units (ICU) and the leading cause of death in the developed world.
Methods: A retrospective, observational study of sepsis in the ICU Obstetric entered in the overall reporting of maternal deaths, from January 2005 to March 2015, 86 were excluded and included 19 patients. Variables were analyzed: age, source of infection, obstetrical period, affected organs and systems and literature review was made.
Results: Sepsis accounted for 18 % (n = 19) of total maternal deaths. Age range: 16-38 years (mean: 24.2 standard deviation ± 6.1). Prevalence: postpartum period: 47.4 % (n = 9), pregnancy or childbirth 36.8 % (n = 7) and abortions 15.8% (n = 3). System and/or affected organs: gastrointestinal 42.1 % (n = 8); pulmonary 21.1% (n = 4); vascular and hematological: 21.1% (n = 4); cardiovascular, cerebral and renal 5.3% (n = 1).
Conclusion: The objective analysis of the characteristics of patients , obstetric etiology associated state and will give us the tools to recognize and attack the enemy, the early onset of aggressive resuscitation by the obstetrician impact on patient survival.
