Effectiveness of diclofenac as analgesic in extracorporeal lithotripsy

ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of sodium diclofenac analgesia in extracorporeal lithotripsy.
Material and methods: Thirty patients were divided into two groups. Group I received 75 mg IV diclofenac thirty minutes before the procedure started. Group II received 0.1 mg fentanyl five minutes before the procedure started. Pain was measured at 5-minutes intervals. Vital signs and arterial oxygen saturation were monitored. In case of severe pain,fentanyl was used as rescue analgesia. Later on, severity of pain and oxygen saturation level were compared among the two groups.
Results: In
Group I, before the first 5 minutes of the procedure elapsed, all patients had a score ≥ 2 in the visual analogue scale (VAS). In Group II, 14 out of
15 patients had a score ≤ 2 in the VAS. Statistical analysis yielded a value of p> 0.001 at five minutes.
Conclusions: Sodium diclofenac provides satisfactory and effective analgesia for this type of procedure. Diclofenac does not depress
respiratory automatism; arterial oxygen saturation did not decrease in any of the patients receiving sodium diclofenac.
