ABSTRACT

Postpartum depression comprises a major public health problem. Currently it is defined with the criteria used for major depression in DSM IV, being applied in the postpartum period. Differential diagnosis must be made with entities such as baby blues and postpartum psychosis. Proper diagnosis is important in order to detect those patients who require drug treatment for reducing the risk of morbidity associated with this disease, both for the mother and for the developing child.
