ABSTRACT
Background. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) usually occurs in the setting of cirrhosis, however many patients develop HCC without this major risk factor. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of hepatocellular carcinoma among non-cirrhotic patients.
Material and methods. A cross-sectional study was performed at Medica Sur Hospital and Clinic Foundation in Mexico City. We obtained the HCC prevalence among non-cirrhotic liver according histological findings.
Results. From January 2005 to April 2012 we evaluated 47 hepatocellular carcinoma cases. The prevalence of this condition among non-cirrhotic patients was 19%.
Conclusions. Hepatocellular carcinoma may occur in the absence of cirrhosis. The prevalence found in Mexico is similar to that reported in the literature.
