Cervical pregnancy: a challenge for the Cuban obstetricians

ABSTRACT

Introduction: cervical ectopic pregnancy represents less than 1% of all ectopic pregnancies. It is an exceptional phenomenon that occurs one of every 2500-18 000 pregnancies; however, morbidity and mortality from this cause are high, but they can be reduced with early diagnosis.
Objectives: to describe the incidence of cervical ectopic pregnancy in patients admitted to "Ramón González Coro" Hospital and to relate it with some variables such as: risk factors, symptoms and employed treatment modality.
Methods: a descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study was made with four patients admitted to "Ramón González Coro" Hospital, from January 2006 to December 2012. The difference between proportions of qualitative variables was employed, choosing from among the treatment modalities and the difference between the means of the quantitative variables chosen.
Results: the incidence of cervical ectopic pregnancy is close to 1% of the ectopic total. Ages ranged from 31 to 41 years, while 75% of the women were nulliparae. In two patients (50%), pain, menstrual delay and bleeding were reported. Radical surgery was performed in only one patient, who was multiparous and with 11 weeks of gestation.
Conclusions: the incidence of cervical ectopic pregnancy has remained similar to what is reported in the bibliography. The antecedents of ectopic pregnancy were not significant. Most patients were nulliparous and ages in which they presented were over 30 years. There was a significant tendency towards the use of drug therapy.
