ABSTRACT
The Limbal Epithelial Stem Cells (LESC´s) are unipotent Stem Cells that
reside in the esclero-corneal limbus. Since the last decade it has been
reported that these cells play an important role in the maintenance and
regeneration of the cornea. The absence of these cells, derive in complications
in the corneal tissue such as losing transparency, regenerative
failure, including the presence of syndromes. The culture and derivation
of LESC’s is a potential strategy for regenerative medicine: Once
the optimal experimental conditions to generate a 3D LESC culture is
established, these 3D constructs could be used as corneal substitutes
in clinical trials.
