ABSTRACT
Background: Peritonsillar abscess is the most common infection of
the deep tissues of the head and neck. It is caused by bacterial invasion
of peritonsillar space. Given the location of the process it requires early
diagnosis and treatment.
Objective: To evaluate the clinical usefulness of the culture of material
obtained by fine-needle aspiration of the peritonsillar abscess of
patients treated at the emergency room of Otolaryngology service of
the University Hospital Complex of Vigo, Pontevedra, Spain.
Material and Method: A descriptive and retrospective study of
49 patients diagnosed with peritonsillar abscess from January 2013
to December 2014; several variables of clinical and epidemiological
character and management of these patients were analyzed.
Results: The age of the patients included in the study ranged from
3 to 87 years with a mean of 33 years; 30 patients (61%) presented
negative growth in culture; in 12 (24.5%) culture was not carried out,
7 (14%) presented a positive culture; the most common pathogen was
Streptococcus pyogenes (four positive cultures).
Conclusions: Culture of the material obtained by fine-needle aspiration
of peritonsillar abscess systematically has limited clinical utility.
