ABSTRACT
Genetic research involves ethical, social, legal and
medical issues, meanwhile psychiatric genetic knowledge
adds more controversial issues. Ethical principles have
been proposed as a guide in this field, but the optimal
utilization of genetic testing has also been recognized
to depend on both knowledge and attitudes of potential
consumers and providers. To explore knowledge and
attitudes about depression and psychiatric genetic testing, we surveyed 29 patients and relatives from a family with a psychiatric diagnosis of bipolar disorder, 181 medical students and 19 psychiatry specialists. A questionnaire was developed specifically for this study on the background of literature concerning ethical, legal, and social issues raised by psychiatric genetics and existing research on attitudes toward psychiatric genetics. It contains 100 items. Information was processed using the STATISTI CA 6,0 software. Most of the respondents correlated the onset of depression with a previous traumatic episode, General attitudes toward access to psychiatric genetic testing and information revealed substantial support for bioethical principles of autonomy and privacy, however, many respondents accepted that some tests may be considered obligatory. The contradictions and differences in attitudes among possible future users and providers of psychiatric genetic testing and counseling indicate ambivalence, insecurity, and perceived lack of knowledge in relation to psychiatric genetics, wich appointed to the need of developping educational strategies directed to the
population and the medical care professionals.
